  • The 28th session of the MAB-ICC was held in Lima during 2016.3.18-20. Extension of Mt. Hakusan BR, Yakushima-Kuchinoerabujima BR and Mt. Odaigahara-Mt. Omine-Osugidani BR were approved. Youtube
  • The 4th WCBR was held in Lima during 2016.3.14-18. Dr. Matsuda from JCC (Scientific Networking Workshop), Dr. Tanaka from JCC, Mr. Nakamura from JBRN (Multi-designation Side Event), Dr. Hasegawa from JICA (Meso America Side Event), and Mr. Iida from UN University (Mountain Workshop) pariticipated there.
  • MAB-BIRUP Workshop “Promoting Green Economies in Biosphere Reserves through Certification, Labelling and Branding Schemes” was held during 2015.12.14-16 at Shanghai, China. Dr. R. Omoto talked.

  • “Third Country Training Program of Integrated biodiversity and Ecosystem Management” was held at University of Malaysia, Sabah on October 3, 2013. Dr. Ohsawa was invited (Program Lecture).
  • “Changbai Mountain International Eco-Festival 2013” was held during September 15-19, at Mt. Changbai BR, China. Mr. Okonogi from NACS-J was invited.
  • MAB-ICC was held during May 27-29, 2013, in Paris. A photo from Aya BR was used on the top page of MAB site.
  • Strategic Meeting of Asia and the Pacific Biosphere Reserve Networks in Shaping the Future We Want for All” was held during April 22-26, 2013, Honoi. Dr. Ohsawa was invited.
  • Dr. Sakai and her colleagues joined RIHN’s ILEK Project and visited Redberry BR in Canada in May, 2013.
  • International Workshop “Enhancing sustainability of local communities, Canadian and Japanese activities in Biosphere Reserves” was held in Yokohama National University on January 23, 2013. JCC invited Dr. M. Reed from Saskatchewan University.
  • WCIBR was held in Jeju Island during September 12-13, 2012. Mr. Tetsuka from Yakushima BR was invited.
  • Symposium “UNESCO Eco-Park: Aya got a big connection with the World Network of BRs” was held at U. of Tokyo on August 18, 2012, organized by Japanese Coorinating Committee for MAB. Prof. Choi Chung-Il (Former chair of MAB/ICC) is an invited.speaker and Prof. Hong Sun-Kee (Mokpo Univ.) is an inivited panelist.
  • Japanese National Report was uploaded (En) and Proposal of Aya BR was approved as the 5th Japanese BR at the 24th MAB/ICC on July 11, 2012
  • Japanese National MAB committee has also discussed the measure to invite interested parties/local community to MAB programme and BR. Based on The Statutory Framework of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, the National Criteria of BR in Japan has been set at the 23rd session of the committee on 28 September 2011. The committee also clarifies the application process for new BR site in Japan.
  • The Japanese National Committee for MAB made a screening of an application for new BR submitted by Aya town, and decided to submit the application to UNESCO at 23rd session of Japanese National Committee on 28 September 2011. The application was evaluated by International Advisory Committee for BR in April 2012.
  • Japan was elected as a member of the International Co-Ordinating Council of the Programme on Man and the Biosphere at General Assembly of UNESCO in 2011.
  • Supporting MAB programme through the Japan Funds-in-Trust (JFIT). With the JFIT, Japan has been supported MAB activities implemented by UNESCO Office Jakarta. The project currently supporting is “Biosphere Reserves for Environmental and Economic Security (BREES)” started from 2009. BREES is a regional climate change and poverty alleviation program that works with communities, educational institutions, government, and donor agencies to use biosphere reserves as learning centers for environmental and human adaptability to climate change effects.
  • Some Japanese including Japanese Coordinating Committee for MAB visited Rhoen BR with Korean and Viet Nam MAB members during June, 2011.
  • The International Evergreen Forest Conference is held at Aya, Miyazaki Pref. during 21-22nd May, 2011. Panel discussion on “Biosphere reserve and citizen participation” is included in this conference.

  • Matsuda & Sakai talk “How to reconcile conservation with sustainable use? — An idea from UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Program” in The interdisciplinary workshop on sustainable symbiosis of human and nature from the view point of “Island study” on 19th February 2011, Tokyo.
  • In the resolution of CBD/COP10, UNESCO’s MAB Programme is refered to by Sustainable use (Document X/21 of Final Report, CBD/COP10), especially in Satoyama Initiative.
  • CBD/COP10 side event “UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), and Japanese activities” on 26 October, 2010 (bilingual: Japanese-English)
  • Increase the visibility and activate the MAB programme and BR: Japanese National MAB Committee has been discussing the way of increasing the visibility and making people/interested parties to understand and participate to the MAB programme in Japan. At the 22nd session on 25 January 2010, the committee decided to make Japanese nickname of BR as “UNESCO Eco Park.”
